Tower of Mangia

The Tower of Mangia was the "bell tower" of the Communal Palace. Therefore it is called from the nickname of "Mangiaguadagni" given to its first caretaker, famous because he appreciated the pleasures of the food and dissipated all his earnings. It is among the highest Italian ancient towers, it arrives to 102 meters with the lightning rod. It was built between 1325 and 1348, with the four angles perfectly in direction North - South and East - West. After several attempts, the first bell was fused in 1348 and installed in 1349 in the bell cell. It was replaced in 1634 but this turned out imperfect. In 1666 the bell that we can see today was installed; it is called by the senesi Sunto (for it dedication to Maria assunta) or Campanone (big bell).
