The city walls

The walls of Grosseto are one of the rare examples in Italy of town-walls that has arrived integral to us. The walls of Grossseto have ancient origins: a first building was already present since the 12th century, but it was destroyed and reconstructed many times. In the second half of the 1500's, Francesco I de' Medici commissioned the building of the "Mura esagonali", still conserved, that were entirely completed in the spring of 1593. The works, that lasted over 19 years, were done by groups of prisoners, purposely released and then put in prison again. The walls follow a hexagonal perimeter, with the corners defended by pentagonal bastions; there are still the galleries and the warehouses. Everywhere there is a pavement of bricks. Leopoldo II decided in 1855 to demolished the towers, making the aspect of the walls nicer, and then the walls were completely transformed in a public park, with paths that go along avenues with trees.
