Santa Maria alle Carceri
The Basilica of Santa Maria alle Carceri is situated in the center of Prato. According to the tradition, on 6 July 1484 a child saw the painting of Madonna with the Child, painted on the wall of the jails (in italian, carceri) of Prato, move. Later there were other similar events and the popular devotion grew, so the citizens decided to built a basilica in that place. It was therefore constructed the church, masterpiece of simmetry and proportions, dated to the first years of the Renaissance. Four stained-glass windows designed by Domenico Ghirlandaio (1491) enrich the interior, together with a white and blue frieze of Andrea della Robbia, author of the beautiful tondos with the Evangelists (1491). The high altar, designed by Sangallo (1515), is a refined aedicule in white marble.
