San Galgano is not a place, it is the name of a medieval knight, than in this part of Tuscany has left traces of his life and the mystery that accompanied him. He was born in 1148 in Chiusdino and died in 1181. The life of Galgano is surrounded by mystery and it gets confused with the legend. There are not documents that testify his existence, while his cult and the sacred buildings dedicated to him are sure: the Rotonda that keeps the sword in the stone and the Abbey whose huge ruins testify the importance and the spread of his cult. The Rotonda is situated in Montesiepi, hamlet of Chiusdino; it was constructed on the place where the noble knight, become monk, retired and lived as hermit until his death. Here is conserved the sword that, according to the tradition, Galgano would have stuck in the stone as a renunciation to his former life. From 1218 it was built, not far away from the Rotonda, the Abbey of San Galgano. The abbey reached a great power, in the 14th century, but after this period of splendor, began that slow decline that reduced it to huge and mystical ruins. Nevertheless, these ruins have a particular fascination, surrounded by magic and mystery. The remains charms and upsets throwing down the visitor in the Middle Ages... the proportions, the materials, the lack of the roof, the empty windows, the silence, the sky... all these elements contribute to shroud and stupefy. The abbey is a setting of magical beauty, where everything tells about Galgano and its age.
