Piazza dell'anfiteatro

The Piazza dell'anfiteatro (square of the Amphitheater) is a square, built on the ruins of the ancient roman amphitheater (III century b.C.), that determines its particular elliptic shape. The square is born in the Middle Ages and in this age was called "parlascio", a mispronunciation of the Latin paralisium ("amphitheater"). Progressively it was filled of constructions, variously used as warehouse of salt, powder store, jail. In the 1800's a urban resumption of the ancient structure was decided. Therefore the space of the arena was freed and was opened the "via dell'anfiteatro". The new city space was used for the city market. Today there are many stores on the square. The access to the square is possible through 4 doors, but only one of these, lowest, exactly traces one of the original accesses.
