Piazza dei Cavalieri

Piazza dei Cavalieri (square of the Knights) is, after Piazza dei Miracoli, the most famous square of the city. In this zone there was the ancient roman forum of the city of Portus Pisanus. The square was the political heart of the medieval Pisa, place of celebrations. From the 1140 approximately the square of the Seven Roads (this the ancient name) became the heart of the Communal life of Pisa, with buildings and churches. In 1254 in the square the Palazzo del Popolo e degli Anziani (palace of the People and the Elders) was built; the captain of the People instead lodged in the nearby Clock's Palace(at least from 1357). In 1558 the works for a complete transformation of the square began on order of Cosimo I. Giorgio Vasari was entrusted of the plan for the new square; first, he decided to regularize the buildings on the square that were confused and irregular.
