Palazzo dell'Orologio

Palazzo dell'Orologio (Clock'sPalace) is one of the buildings on the Piazza dei Cavalieri (square of the Knights). It is an ancient medieval building, that, when was built, incorporated the famous Tower of the Muda or of the Hunger, where in 1289 the Earl Ugolino della Gherardesca, his sons and grandsons died; they are protagonist of one of the most celebrates parts of the Divina Commedia by Dante (Inferno, XXXIII canto). The profile of the tower is still recognizable. In 1605-1608, as a result of the union of two nearby buildings through an arc with the clock, the palace took the current shape, according to the plan of Giorgio Vasari (1554). Between the 1607 and 1609 Giovanni Stefano Marucelli and Filippo Palladini frescoed the façade and the vault of the arc. The clock and the bell cell date back to 1696.
