Palazzo dei Vescovi

The old Palace of the Bishops is an important example of the civil architectur of the Middle Ages in the territory of Pistoia and rises near the Cathedral, in the heart of the city. The Palace accommodated the Bishops of the city until 1786, when it was sold to a private citizen. The first token about the Palace goes back to 1091; initially it was a fortified building, with merlons, then in the 12th century it reached the aspect of a mansion. The history of the Palace is characterised by many modifications and restorations, above all in the period comprised between the 12th century and the 13th century, when it was built the Sacrestia di San Iacopo, that guarded the relics of the Saint. In 1786 the Palace of the Bishops contiguous to the cathedral was sold, and the new owners obtained additional rooms without respecting the original structures. Today the Old Palace of the Bishops accommodates the Museo Capitolare, that keeps the church furnishings and the canonicals from the Cathedral and the Sacrestia di San Iacopo, beyond to various modern works, like the Pomona by Marino Marini or the paintings by Giovanni Boldini.
