Church of San Francesco - Grosseto

Originally dedicated to San Fortunato, during the 1200's the beautiful church of San Francesco was given, together with the nearby cloister, by the Benedictine Friars to the Franciscans. In the following ages the complex has endured varies restorations; the bell tower was destroyed by a lightning and then rebuilt in the first half of the 20th century. The church has a simple facade with the portal characterized by a lunette with frescoes, protected by a wooden tabernacle, over which there is the rose-window. As the nearby convent, the church is realized in fired bricks, except for the base of the facade, and it is constituted by a huge hall with wooden ceiling. Inside, there are several works of art among which the famous Crocifisso by Duccio di Boninsegna, dated towards the end of the 13th century. The cloister of the convent develops on the left flank of the church, and is characterized by a porch supported from columns. In the center of the cloister there is the 14th century "Pozzo della Bufala" (well of the buffalo); flanked by two columns on which there is a crown: under the well there is the cistern where the water is collected.
