Church of San Francesco

The basilica, built with stones and bricks, is in the homonimous Piazza San Francesco. The Basilica is historically the second church of the Franciscan Friars in Arezzo. Before, it was outside of the ancient walls; the reason for which the first church was destroyed and this second one was built is the necessity of defense from the devastations caused by the enemy armies. The community, in 1290, prayed the friars to build up the church within the walls. The broad inside has one nave, flanked on the left by some chapels and on the right by niches with ornaments of the 1300's. On the walls of the main chapel, between the 1453 and 1464, Piero della Francesca painted the cycle of frescoes "the Legend of the True Cross", considered one of the masterpieces of all the Renaissance painting. The frescoes decorate the Bacci chapel, and have been brought back to the original artistic value with a job of restoration completed in Nineties.
